The appointment of Usman Alkali Baba as the new Inspector General of Police has continued to generate ripples as recent revelation suggests massive betrayal of the immediate past IG who allegedly paid N2bn for his tenure extension.
EKO HOT BLOG reported earlier that President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday removed Mohammed Adamu as the Inspector-General of Police before the expiration of his extended tenure.
The Police chief was in Owerri in response to the recent attacks on the police command in Imo State when he heard the news that the President had replaced him with Mr. Baba, before the expiration of the three months extension to his tenure which originally expired early February, 2021.
Adamu was slated to retire on February 1, but the President on February 4 extended his tenure by three months, citing the need to take adequate time to select his successor as the putative reason behind the extension.
The Police Chief had about 28 days to the end of the extended tenure when the President terminated his tenure extension prematurely.
SaharaReporters had in February exposed how the former IGP paid over N2 billion to get a one-year extension in office but was ultimately granted only a three months extension.
According to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity, Adamu had visited traditional rulers and influential figures in a bid to lobby his way to a one-year tenure extension but consequently saw those efforts yield very little returns.

The source also said that when the three months extension was announced, Adamu locked his door and prevented his colleagues from congratulating him.
He said: “After spending over N2 billion to get a one-year tenure (extension), he is very upset and has refused to celebrate his tenure extension. He had brought in marabouts (a Muslim holy man or hermit) from Maiduguri well guarded by MOPOL (mobile police) but their predictions didn’t work.
“He reportedly visited traditional rulers and persons of influence across Nigeria and spent on villa influencers only to get 3 months and he is very sad about it. When the announcement was made, he locked his door; he did not allow senior officers to congratulate him.
“Now, he has embarked on a vendetta mission against those suspected to have campaigned against him in the upper echelon of the police.”
