How Deep Will Simi-Obey’s Chemistry Go With “Oloo Mi”?
Ekohotblog: How Deep Will Simi-Obey’s Chemistry Go With “Oloo Mi”?
Remixing old tunes by new singers should naturally create a nostalgia for any listener, mostly adults, who were there when the original song was born.
However the absence of many Nigerian adults online is doing a great disservice to evergreen records of such legends like Chief Ebenezer Obey, King Sunny Ade, Victor Olaiya, Victor Uwaifo, Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
Unlike songs released by some American legends, dead or alive that are still gathering million views on the YouTube, none of the Nigerian old singers had gathered more than two millions on a song published on YouTube about 10 years ago on the average.
Today, there are more than five versions of “Have you ever seen the rain”, a song by Credence Clearwater Revival of 1971.
This original version has garnered over 466 million views on YouTube, making it one of the most listened to music around the world despite that it came on to the platform about five years ago.
Popular American Rock and Roll star, Rod Stewards makes great the lyrics, which was published on the YouTube nine years ago, now with 407 million views.
American country singer and one of the remaining old guitarists, Willie Nelson made a duet of “Have you ever seen the rain”, the country version, now about 5.2 million YouTube views.
It makes a lot of sense revamping great songs by new singers even when it has become so taxing to fill the shoes of those who originally created the beats and the voices behind those evergreen records.
Nigerian songstress, Simisola Bolatito Kosoko, aka, Simi may have learnt faster from this idea when he released “Aimasiko”, a song originally sung by the Juju maestro, Chief Ebenezer Obey.
Found on YouTube about six years ago, Simi’s version of Aimasiko has gathered over 3.6 million while her latest duet with the originator itself could only get 69,000 after three years that it was published.
Recall the duet of Tu Baba and Sir Victor Olaiya (Baby mi da) a few years ago. The song only gathered 155, 000 views after nine years that it found itself to the YouTube.
The original version on the YouTube has 149,000 views, which explains that most adults who really cherish these old tunes hardly visit the YouTube.
While one will always applaud Simi for putting a lot of effort to recreate these evergreen records, the best the adults can do is to go online to encourage the singers.
With Simi’s version of “Oloo Mi”, originally sung by Obey, one is being tempted to ask how long will it travel online without the presence of the adults who cherish the lyrics more than the GenZ.
