It is within these dynamic downtown areas that Lagos’ reputation as Nigeria’s commercial nerve center becomes evident.
The relentless energy and industriousness of its people, combined with the diverse array of goods and services available, truly set Lagos apart as an economic powerhouse and a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of its inhabitants.
Dr. Jumoke Odewole, the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, spoke highly of Isale Eko Descendants Union at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at Isale-Eko House at Iga Idungaran Street, Lagos where a job database for Indigenes was launched.
She emphasized the strategic importance of Isale-Eko as a vital commercial hub within Lagos State.
She noted that Isale-Eko significantly contributes to the state’s economy and plays a crucial role in driving Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Odewole described Isale-Eko as a dynamic center of commerce, stating that its vibrant business environment not only fuels the growth of Lagos but also has a considerable impact on the nation’s overall economic development.
“Lagos State ranks among the top 10 economies in Africa by GDP, and Isale-Eko plays a vital role in this.
The volume of trade, the vibrancy of the markets, and the entrepreneurial spirit in this area underscore its importance to the state’s economic activities,” she said.
The Minister also stressed the importance of positioning Nigeria for continental trade through the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AFCFTA) while creating opportunities for young people.
“Our young people are skilled in technology and light manufacturing. The question is, how do we position them for exports? These are critical issues tied to my portfolio and this community,” she said.
Dr. Odewole promised to continue advocating for the community’s interests, saying: “We’re here today as Isale-Eko descendants to talk about our community and its issues.
We’ve discussed the environment, health, audited accounts, and initiatives unique to this community. This is a very important union, and I’m privileged to be part of it.”
The Job database Launched by the Isale-Eko Descendants Union (IDU) Chairman, Adeniji Kazeem (SAN), he said the Job database is an innovative platform designed to bridge the gap between job seekers and employers within the Isale-Eko community.
Kazeem noted that the initiative aims to address the pressing issue of unemployment within the community by connecting Isale-Eko indigenes with various employment opportunities across Lagos State.
“The Isale-Eko Descendants Union Job Database is a directory of all Isale-Eko indigenes seeking employment. It will enable the Union to provide targeted information to employers whenever requests are made,” he said.
The Chairman encouraged members of the community to make the most of the newly launched IDU Job Database by submitting their resumes.
To participate, members are advised to include essential details such as their name, age, gender, religion, field of work, job preferences, and years of experience in their resume.
Submissions can be made via the Union’s official email or WhatsApp platform, allowing for convenient access and a streamlined process.
“This database will also allow prospective employers to advertise or upload job positions, ensuring our people are aware of job opportunities within Lagos State,” he added.
Reflecting on a recent visit to the Union’s Patron, the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, Kazeem highlighted the monarch’s concerns about environmental degradation in the area.
“Oba Akiolu observed that many streets have become impassable due to flooding and unauthorized markets, while unrestricted construction without proper building approvals continues to blight our community,” he said.
The traditional ruler advised the temporary suspension of the annual Isale-Eko Day Cultural Walk until stakeholders effectively address the pressing issues faced by the community.
This decision highlights the urgency of finding solutions and ensuring the well-being of Isale-Eko residents.
Adeniji Kazeem (SAN), the Chairman of the Isale-Eko Descendants Union (IDU), expressed optimism about the Lagos State Government’s proposed Lagos Island regeneration plans.
However, he emphasized the need for timely implementation to realize the intended benefits for the community.
In addition, Kazeem called on the local government to capitalize on its renewed financial and operational autonomy to drive meaningful development in Isale-Eko.
By leveraging these resources, the local government can contribute significantly to the betterment of the community and its residents.
To further support the Union’s ongoing efforts, Kazeem encouraged both local and diaspora members of the IDU to contribute financially and morally to the Union’s various programs.
“I urge our members to join hands with us to transform our community so we can be proud of our roots.”
