EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to Kolawole Ogunwemimo, a Mechanical Engineer in Ogun State, there is a recent trend in Nigeria where people are using Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) to power generator sets instead of traditional petrol (PMS).

This shift was prompted by the removal of fuel subsidies, leading to a significant increase in petrol prices.

EDITOR’S PICKS

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s announcement on May 29 about the government’s inability to sustain fuel subsidies resulted in petrol prices soaring to over N600 per liter, causing considerable hardship for citizens who previously purchased it at around N200 per liter.

Nigerians have now turned to LPG as an alternative fuel source for their generators, but there are concerns about safety and efficiency. Engineer Ogunwemimo explained that LPG leakages can be difficult to detect and can lead to explosions if not handled and maintained properly. Additionally, engines converted from petrol to LPG may have reduced efficiency, as they were not originally designed for this type of fuel.

He emphasized the need for the government to educate the public on the proper handling and maintenance of LPG-powered generators to prevent accidents.
