The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, officially launched the program in Abuja on Thursday.
Kyari stated that this initiative is part of President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to ensure that no Nigerian goes hungry.
As part of this intervention, 30,000 metric tonnes of milled rice have been made available for distribution at a subsidized rate.
“This food intervention is timely, considering the current challenges faced by citizens,” Kyari remarked.

“It gives me great pleasure to announce the commencement of the sale of 30,000MT of government-subsidized rice at ₦40,000 per 50kg. This was made possible through the directives of President Bola Tinubu, who is committed to ensuring that Nigerians do not go to bed hungry.”
Kyari also noted that buyers will be required to verify their identity using their National Identification Number (NIN) and phone numbers.
This system is designed to prevent individuals from purchasing more than one bag, ensuring fair distribution and transparency.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that the introduction of 30,000MT of rice into the market is expected to lower the price of rice and other related food items. Kyari encouraged citizens to cooperate with government agencies to ensure the smooth execution of this initiative.
Dr. Haruna Sule, Director of Strategic Grains Reserve at the Ministry of Agriculture, explained how the process will work. Civil servants can access the subsidized rice using their Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) at designated sales points.
Buyers will pay electronically and receive a treasury receipt with a unique code indicating their payment.
“The receipt will specify the point and time of collection to avoid any form of stampede,” Sule said. Once at the collection point, buyers will present their code to receive their rice.
Five to six sales points are expected to be set up across Abuja, and distribution will continue until the stock is sold out.
