Eko Hot Blog reports that there are specific features that can help you differentiate a fake naira note from a genuine one.
Recall that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) released the redesigned notes in the denominations of N200, N500, and N1,000 on December 15, 2022.
However, some people are already circulating the fake copies of the new N1000 notes.
A mobile money and bank agent recently claimed that a customer used a fake version of the redesigned N1,000 to conduct a bank transaction at his wife’s Point of Sale (PoS) store.
According to the agent, fake and genuine naira notes have different serial numbers, even though their designs are identical.
The most obvious difference is the gold seal ingrained in a genuine N1000 naira note. A genuine N1000 note typically features a gold seal at the bottom of the right side that cannot be broken. However, the gold foil on a fake note peels off when scratched, while that of an original note won’t peel.
Also, the new naira notes feature a thread running from the top to the bottom that looks like a ribbon. In real notes, this thread can be felt. However, in fake notes, there’s something that looks like the thread but it’s not. What is there is just straight line painting that looks like the thread in original notes. If you scratch the painting, it will peel off like the solver panel on recharge cards.
Finally, some features of the redesigned naira notes cannot be seen with naked eyes. You can only see them with the help of mercury bulbs. For instance, if a real N1000 note is placed under the rays from a mercury bulb, it will show a glowing 1000 (in numbers) written across the note. The same applies to smaller denominations.
Meanwhile, Eko Hot Blog gathered that banks are still processing payments using the older currency denominations.
According to the banks, there is not enough of the new currency to sufficiently circulate throughout the economy.
As a result, they are forced to release the redesigned naira notes in small numbers alongside the older ones.
