EKO HOT BLOG reports that Daniel Bwala, the spokesperson for the Atiku Abubakar presidential campaign, has said Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State deceived his G5 colleagues.
According to Bwala, Wike gave the impression that he was supporting Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, but was secretly backing Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been enmeshed in crisis after the party’s national convention in May 2022 where former Vice President Atiku Abubakar defeated 12 other aspirants, including Wike to emerge the party presidential candidate for the 2023 elections.
Dissatisfied with the outcome of the primary, a group of five PDP governors (G5) demanded the replacement of the party’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu with a southerner to correct the “regional imbalance” in the PDP since Messrs Atiku and Ayu are both northerners.
Apart from Wike, other governors who are members of the G5 are Samuel Ortom (Benue), Ifeanyi Ugwanyi (Enugu), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Seyi Makinde (Oyo).
The G5 governors, who were appointed to the PDP presidential campaign council, withdrew their membership, boycotted its inauguration and shunned PDP presidential campaign activities.
“He (Wike) made them (his colleagues) believe that he was behind Peter Obi. So, he can’t openly come out now to declare support for the APC candidate because the other four governors do not want Tinubu,” Bwala told Punch in a report published on Saturday.
