EKO HOT BLOG reports that Buhari urged Nigerians to be patient with Tinubu’s administration’s reform agenda, cautioning that “necessary reforms and desired changes” must not be derailed by “nettlesome domestic politics.”
In a statement signed by his former spokesperson, Garba Shehu, and titled “Tinubu Gets Buhari’s Praise, Advice At Midterm,” the former president advised Nigerians to manage their expectations and support the government’s gradual approach to tackling economic challenges.
“Reforms would achieve success gradually, not overnight,” Buhari said, adding that efforts to combat poverty and inflation—issues he acknowledged have “hit the poorest families the hardest”—require collective responsibility, not just government action.
President Tinubu’s administration, which began on May 29, 2023, has implemented sweeping economic policies under the Renewed Hope Agenda, including ending fuel subsidies, liberalising the exchange rate, and repaying a $3.4 billion COVID-19 loan to the International Monetary Fund. While these moves have earned praise from international observers, they have also triggered a harsh cost-of-living crisis at home.
Despite growing public discontent, Buhari voiced strong support for the Tinubu government and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which recently endorsed Tinubu as its sole presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.
Buhari who said, “Steadfast support for the APC government is crucial,” added that “The private sector and all of us as citizens must join in all ways we can” to ensure reforms succeed.
While calling on Nigerians to remain hopeful and resilient, he said, “Our expectations from our governments should not get heavy.

The former President added, “I am wishing President Tinubu heartfelt congratulations on his two years in office. May you keep leading with wisdom and care.”
