EKO HOT BLOG reports that an NGO, Mimfad Autism Developmental and Other Disabilities Support Initiative (MADODSI), organised an interactive session with children with disabilities and their parents in Kaduna with the aim of eliminating stigma with the People living with a disability.

Chief Executive Officer of MADODSI, Maryam Ibrahim-Maifada,  said that the interactive session was to sensitise people living with disabilities like autism, down syndrome and cerebral palsy which many might not be aware of.

Ibrahim-Maifada added that the session was also to eliminate the stigmatisation of special needs children in society.

According to her, people, most times, organise activities to have fun as adults but mostly forget that children with disabilities also play and feel loved more than those without disabilities.

“This day is especially recognised to focus attention on the place of children in the society, highlight their needs and how to better protect and nurture them.

“So, we decided to make the day special for them by ensuring that we put smiles on their faces and remind them that although we might be busy sometimes, we still care.

“Special needs children have the right to be happy and have fun and that’s why we usually do it in parks so that they will be free to play like any other child,’’ she said.

Ibrahim-Maifada added that the session was to make the children have a sense of belonging in the society, develop their social interaction among their peers and ensure societal inclusion.

“We are happy with this interactive session because we want to show them the love and affection which they always want from people.

“We also decided to have interaction with their parents in order to give them words of encouragement and opportunity to meet other parents of special needs so as to encourage one another in dealing with their children,” she said.
