Hunter Biden’s legal has announced in court on Thursday that they are seeking a plea deal in his federal tax evasion case in California.
The proposed deal, known as an Alford plea, would allow Biden to maintain his innocence while acknowledging that the prosecution has enough evidence to convict him.
He would then accept whatever sentence the judge hands down.
The announcement came just as jury selection was about to begin, and the court is now on break until 2 p.m. ET.
The deal still needs to be approved by District Judge Mark Scarsi, a Trump appointee who has presided over the tax case.
Biden’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, stated that “I think this can be resolved today,” but prosecutors from special counsel David Weiss’s team objected to the Alford plea.

They claimed that they had not been informed of the potential plea change and would need time to review the law surrounding it.
The tax case allegations include nine counts of tax crimes, with prosecutors claiming that Biden failed to pay $1.4 million in federal taxes and evaded taxes by filing fraudulent business deductions.
They also allege that he used his money on luxury items and services instead of paying taxes.
Biden has previously been convicted on three federal gun charges in Wilmington, Delaware, and paid roughly $2 million in back taxes and penalties after learning of the investigation.
The judge blocked Biden’s lawyers from telling jurors about the belated tax payment and potential origins of his addiction, dealing a significant blow to his defense strategy.
With 120 prospective jurors waiting, the judge indicated that if the plea deal is not accepted, the trial will move forward with jury selection on Thursday and Friday as planned.
President Joe Biden has stated that he will not pardon his son in either of his cases, but it remains to be seen if his thinking has changed since dropping his reelection bid.
