I Can’t Run In 2028 Unless The GOP Figures Something Out – Trump
During a meeting with House Republicans on Wednesday, President-elect Donald Trump made a remark that seemed to hint at the possibility of him serving a third term in 2028.
According to audio shared with newsmen, Trump jokingly suggested, “I suspect I won’t be running again, unless you do something,” adding, “Unless you say, ‘He’s so good, we have to just figure it out.’”

The comment sparked laughter among GOP lawmakers, with some brushing it off as a joke. However, this isn’t the first time Trump has made such remarks. He has previously entertained ideas of extending his term or finding ways to bypass term limits.
Currently, the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits any president from serving more than two terms, regardless of whether they are consecutive. The amendment states, in part, “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.”

This amendment was introduced in 1947 after President Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected to four consecutive terms. Roosevelt remains the only president to serve more than two terms, though other presidents before him also sought a third term.
Over the years, there have been multiple attempts to repeal the 22nd Amendment, but none have made significant progress. Could the Trump administration, with GOP majorities in both the Senate and House, manage to repeal it? It’s highly unlikely.
To repeal the amendment, a new amendment would need to be proposed, requiring a two-thirds majority in both the House and Senate. With the incoming GOP not holding enough seats to meet that threshold, this scenario is improbable. Alternatively, state legislators could call for a constitutional convention, but any new amendment would need approval from three-quarters of the states—a further hurdle.

However, some lawmakers are taking precautions. Rep. Dan Goldman of New York announced last week that he was filing a resolution to clarify the 22nd Amendment, aiming to make it clear that the amendment applies “to two terms in the aggregate.” While the resolution is unlikely to reach a vote under House Speaker Mike Johnson, it highlights the ongoing discussions surrounding presidential term limits.
While the 22nd Amendment firmly limits presidential terms, there are still debates about the possibility of a two-term president returning to office under very specific circumstances, due to language in both the 22nd and 12th Amendments. However, these scenarios remain rare and complex.
