‘I was starving, in debt’ – Jason Momoa talks financial struggles after ‘Game of Thrones’

NOVEMBER 11, 2020

American actor, Jason Momoa, has narrated how he became financially constrained after his stint on ‘Game of Thrones’ came to an abrupt end in 2011.

The American fantasy drama television series — created by HBO — premiered on April 17, 2011 and concluded on May 19, 2019 with 73 episodes broadcast over eight seasons.

The project, which was a TV series adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’, recorded huge success, snagging several awards and recognitions.

The series had won 10 Creative Arts Emmy Awards at the 2019 edition of the ceremony after garnering nominations in 32 different categories.

But in spite of the success recorded by the series, Momoa, who played the role of Khal Drogo in its season one, said he didn’t benefit much from project.

In an interview with Instyle, the movie star recalled how he struggled to pay his bills after his character was killed in 2011 when the series was just starting to gain global prominence.

The actor, who lived at Topanga Canyon, near Los Angeles, with Lisa Bonet, his wife, and two children — Lola, 13, and Nakoa-Wolf, 11 — said he was “in complete debt” at the time.

“I mean, we were starving after ‘Game of Thrones.’ I couldn’t get work. It’s very challenging when you have babies and you’re completely in debt,” he said.

According to Momoa, he started to overcome his financial struggles about five years later after his stints in 2016’s ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ 2017’s ‘Justice League’ and 2018’s ‘Aquaman’.
