EKO HOT BLOG reports that beloved Hollywood actor Michael J. Fox has opened up about his struggles with Parkinson’s disease, revealing that it is getting harder to cope with as he ages.
In an interview with Jane Pauley set to air on CBS Sunday Morning, Fox discusses the increasing obstacles he faces due to the disease he was diagnosed with at the age of 29.
A preview clip shows the actor’s frankness as he admits that things are getting worse. “It’s banging on the door,” he says. “Yeah, I mean, I’m not gonna lie. It’s gettin’ hard, it’s gettin’ harder. It’s gettin’ tougher. Every day it’s tougher. But, but that’s — that’s the way it is.”
Despite his own struggles, Fox has been a longtime advocate for Parkinson’s research through his own foundation, which has played an instrumental role in identifying a biogenetic marker that could help with early diagnosis and treatment.
However, the actor acknowledges that even with his advocacy, he cannot deny his own mortality. In the interview, Fox reveals that he had spinal surgery for a benign tumor, which affected his walking and has led to a slew of problems, including two broken arms, a broken hand, and broken bones in his face.
He also discusses the subtle ways Parkinson’s can lead to death, such as falling and aspirating food, which can lead to pneumonia. Despite these challenges, Fox remains optimistic and grateful for his life.
“I can be optimistic as long as I’m grateful,” he told Entertainment Weekly in a recent interview. “And I can be grateful if I really think about it because I wouldn’t have had the rest of my life if it weren’t for so many things that Tracy [Pollan, his wife], chief among them, came in and intervened in. And it sounds hokey, but to this day, if I can find one little thing to be grateful for, I can be optimistic about it.”
Fox’s full interview with Jane Pauley will air on CBS Sunday Morning on April 30 at 9 a.m. ET/PT. Additionally, the new documentary Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, which details the actor’s struggles with Parkinson’s, will be released on Apple TV+ on May 12.
