Ekohotblog reports that the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government has issued a stern warning to unauthorized traders and vendors who have been illegally occupying walkways, roadways, and public spaces for commercial purposes.
The encroachment is not only defacing the roads but also causing significant inconvenience to road users, with some instances resulting in avoidable accidents.
The local government, under the leadership of Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, has expressed deep concern over the growing number of traders turning walkways into makeshift trading posts.
These actions, according to the government, put public safety at risk and block the free movement of pedestrians.
In a statement, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa emphasized the administration’s commitment to maintaining a cleaner, safer, and more organized environment. He said:
“Our administration is fully dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents. This encroachment on walkways and public spaces is unacceptable. These areas are meant for the free movement of pedestrians, and their obstruction not only causes inconvenience but also puts lives at risk.”
He further reiterated that the administration will enforce a zero-tolerance policy towards those who persist in turning public spaces into commercial zones.
“We will not hesitate to take strict action against anyone caught violating this directive. Our goal is to ensure that our roads and walkways remain clean, safe, and accessible to all. Anyone found engaging in illegal trading on walkways will face the full weight of the law,” he added.
The local government has already begun mobilizing enforcement teams to identify and remove any unauthorized vendors from public spaces.
Hon. Olowa has also called on residents and business owners to cooperate with the authorities by adhering to city planning regulations and reporting any cases of encroachment.
