The family of a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), the late Prof. Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe, has debunked a video currently trending on social media, suggesting the professor contracted coronavirus at a social gathering that led to his death.
Eko Hot Blog recalls that a video that went viral on social media platforms had claimed without evidence that the late scholar contracted COVID-19 at a social gathering he attended.
A press statement issued and signed on behalf of the family by Dimeji Kayode-Adedeji, cousin to the late Professor, noted that the circulating video was the work of mischievous persons.
He explained that the party being referred to in the video was attended years back before the outbreak of the coronavirus.

The statement emphasised that while the erudite scholar was alive, he was mindful of the virus and cautious of the safety guidelines and protocols.
The Ibidapo-Obe family disclosed that in conformity with the guidelines and protocols, he carried out many of his functions via zoom/webinar.
They also insisted that the late Professor did not die of COVID-19 complications, adding that all the immediate family members, after his demise, had submitted themselves to coronavirus test, and all the tests showed negative results.
“The death and cause is best known to God, who, we as mortal, could not question, but to take solace in the Almighty who is a comforter, because before our father’s death he remained bubbling and active,” the statement added.
