The institute unveiled the fund at an event held at Jubilee Chalets, Epe, on Saturday, December 17, 2022.
In his address, the Special Guest of Honour and Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, thanked ICAN for giving children in Epe the “rare opportunity” to excel in the accounting profession from a young age.
Hamzat, who was represented by the Permanent Board Member of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, Dr. Hakeem Shittu, therefore, charged students who were in attendance to make the most of the opportunity.
“I am grateful for the financial support garnered to execute this laudable project. It is a rare opportunity for our children to excel in the accounting profession from a younger age,” the deputy governor said.
“We never had this kind of opportunity as students. This level of mentorship is such that is hard to come by anywhere and I charge you students to make the opportunity count through your commitment and dedication to your studies.
“There are several factors in the society that will distract you, especially your poor background, the trend of get-rich-quick, pre-marital sex which may lead to unwanted pregnancy, cultism and other forms of social vices, do not be deterred but determined to excel against all odds.”
Hamzat went on to accept his induction as one of ICAN’s patrons and pledged his support towards the district’s educational development and progammes.
In his welcome address, the District Chairman, Mr. Stephen Adekunle Otusemade, said the ICAN project will transform several lives in the Epe Division.
According to Otusemade, the fund serves the dual purpose of promoting accountancy education in Epe and providing material and financial support to the indigenes and the girl-child university education.
“The fund is expected to transform the lives of many young men and women from the Epe Division, covering Epe Central, Eredo, Ibeju-Lekki, and Agbowa/Ikosi-Ejinrin. Therefore, I am appealing to all our district members, guests and sponsors to fully support this project with your generous donations,” he said.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Royal father of the day, the Alara of Ilara Kingdom of Epe Division, HRM Oba Dr. Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo, applauded ICAN’s efforts to raise more accountants to be in the positions of leadership in Nigeria.
“Education is very important and then the accounting profession, as it is today, we need to raise more accountants to be in the positions of leadership in this country. As you can see, the economy is in a dire state and needs top professionals to come and help us salvage the economy which has to be a continuous thing,” the monarch, who was also inducted as an ICAN patron said.
“So, when we start from the cradle now, trying to raise people and our children to be professionals in Accounting and Finance in Economics and other economic fields, we will be doing a lot of good for the economy of Nigeria for now and for the immediate future.”
On his part, the Guest Speaker of the event, Dr. Abiodun Muritala, encouraged students to study hard and not be deterred by immediate challenges.
“Even if you don’t have shoes, trek to school. I started at Alaro High School and it was a rough patch for me. I had no money to buy textbooks but I thank God for the very good teachers we had then. I depended on the notes they give us to read and pass my examinations. Please, study hard so that you can become Governors, Presidents, Lawyers, and Accountants like me,” he said.
Muritala, who’s also the Accountant-General of Lagos State, urged teachers to go the extra mile to teach the students effectively for national development, adding that technology must be explored in the teaching and learning process.
Earlier, the representatives of Otunba Paul Awolaja and Ambassador Justice George Olusola Oguntade were inducted as Grand patron and patron of the district respectively.
Likewise, students of Odomola Senior High School, Community Senior High School Akodo and Mocped International Secondary School, who emerged 1st, 2nd and 3rd in a competition organised by ICAN, were presented with awards and medals.
Other notable guests at the event include Chief Oluwaseun Afuye (the Akeweje of Ilara Kingdom), and the representative of Chief S.O Bakare of Oluwalogbon Motors.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that ICAN envisioned the endowment fund to cater to ICAN scholarships for 50 indigenes for ICAN professional exams at the rate of N200,000 per student.
The Girl-child education programme in Accounting is expected to gulp the sum of N100,000 each for 15 female students, while the donation of books to 9 public secondary schools is pegged at N500,000 per school.
