When a strong a man dies, it is difficult to stop the rumours mills from rolling. That appears to be the case with Eastern Security network (ESN) Commander Ikonso Don, who was killed by the military during a raid on Saturday.
The military said Ikonso Don was killed during an ambush in Imo State. They paraded his blood drenched body to the press and gloated about how they have dealt a major blow to the militant wing of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) barely four months after it was set up by IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu.
But now, there are uncomfirmed reports making the rounds on social media that Ikonso Don may not have been killed with a gun as reported by the military, that he was tortured to death by the military.
As a matter of fact, it was said that bullets could not penetrate his body, that is why the military resorted to torture to get the job done.
The purveyors of the rumoured have supported their theory with the claim that a warrior doesn’t surrender, if he does then he is not worthy of their status.
The rumour of Ikonso’s death through torture is a common story in certain quarters in the South East and it is beginning to spread wide on social media including nairaland.

One of those that posted the comment on nairaland is an eye witness identified on the platform as dignity33, EKO HOT BLOG gathered.
According to him, “Ikonso the IPOB commander was not killed by military bullet but was tortured to death after he surrendered to Nigeria securities with two of his bodyguards. No other ESN was killed forget about military propaganda. Look his body if you doubt me,” he said.
So far, there is no way to independently verify the report, except to go by what the military has said. According to the Army, the ESN commander was among the seven people killed during an exchange of gunfire between government forces and ESN fighters.
Until we can independently verify what transpired then it’s safe to go with what the military has said, In essence that Ikonso Don was felled by military bullets.
Meanwhile IPOB has already named a successor to Ikonso. But they didn’t identify him apparently for security reasons.
