Acting Director-General, National Taskforce for combating illegal importation of weapons, Musa Mohammed, on Thursday solicited government’s support in combating and intercepting the importation and sale of illegal weapons.
Mohammed, who made the appeal during a ceremony in Abuja, stressed that the Taskforce was aware of several criminal hideouts in the country.

He stated that the organisation was ready to work with other law enforcement agencies to intercept the criminals.
He added that the structure was already designed and that it needed the intervention of the government on mobility that would help it reach different areas of the country to assess the security situation.
”There’s a lot of criminal hideout even here in the FCT.
“With mobility we will be able to reach all these sensitive areas where illegal arms and ammunition are being imported and intercept them.
”My first mandate is to solve all our problems with other security agencies and to call for the president to assist us and extend his relationship with the Director-General towards us as well.
“So, we can figure out how to solve the problem of security using the national task force.
”Presently, we still feed the other law enforcement agencies with intelligence on how to catch these criminals but they always hijack the credit.
“This time around, we will develop a robust structure.
”We have genuine information about some of these issues, where the arms are being imported from etc, and we have arrested some of them and then handed over to the police.
”But usually the police do not give us recognition and show to the public that we are responsible for intercepting criminals.
“They hijack our credit. We have a lot that we are doing.
”We arrest notorious criminals in FCT who even the security agencies in Abuja do not know their whereabouts.
”If the other security agencies cooperate with us, we are ready to show them all these criminal hideouts and to take the necessary action against them,” he said.
Mohammed noted that the Taskforce previously had a good relationship with other security agencies but it was currently being strained.
”Nevertheless, we are working on the way forward to settle all the contentious issues between all the agencies.
“Under my watch we will come to a resolution.
”In katsina alone, I can tell you about 200 borders where these illegal arms are passed through.
“So, if the government fully backs us and our bill which is currently in the National Assembly, we will do better than any law enforcement agency in Nigeria.
”The bill to establish National Taskforce on illegal Importation of arms, ammunition, light weapons and chemical weapons is currently in its second reading.
“I believe the president will sign it promptly because he is interested in the security of the country.
”If our bill goes through, we will not be redundant to the government.
“We have so many ways of generating income, both for ourselves and the government as well.
“Establishing the bill will come at no cost to the government. Our structure is well arranged,” he said.
