Flags will be raised to full height on January 20 for Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 47th president, even though President Joe Biden had ordered flags to stay at half-staff to honor former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at 100 on December 29.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, a Republican, announced the decision on X (formerly Twitter), saying: “On January 20, the flags at the Capitol will fly at full-staff to celebrate the inauguration of President Donald Trump.” The flags will be lowered back to half-staff the next day to continue honoring Carter.
Jimmy Carter, the longest-living U.S. president, was admired for his contributions after leaving office. After his death, Biden ordered flags to stay at half-staff on federal buildings for 30 days, which overlaps with Trump’s inauguration.
Trump criticized Democrats, saying they were happy about the idea of flags not flying at full height during his inauguration. He wrote on Truth Social: “Democrats are excited about the flag being at half-staff during my inauguration. They don’t love our country, only themselves. This is unfair to Americans who want to see the flag at full height on this special day.”
This situation is unusual, as flags were kept at half-staff during Richard Nixon’s 1973 inauguration to honor former President Harry Truman, who had passed away shortly before.
