EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is poised to defend the 2023 general election results with no fewer than nine Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs).
As revealed by City Lawyer, the legal team is led by the former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Abubakar Mahmoud (SAN).
Other lawyers in the team include Stephen Adehi (SAN), Oluwakemi Pinheiro (SAN), Miannaya Essien (SAN), and Abdullahi Aliyu (SAN).
A member of the team disclosed that four of the SANs are part of INEC’s legal department, alongside Garba Hassan, Musa Attah, and Patricia Obi.
Per reports, the commission earmarked over N3 billion to defend the results of the February 25 presidential and national assembly elections and the March 18 governorship and state assembly polls.
The elections have been trailed by controversies, with candidates who lost filing petitions at the presidential and state election petition tribunals to contest the outcome.
As of the time of filing this report, over 100 petitions have been filed by dissatisfied candidates and their various parties in different parts of the nation.
Most notable of the candidates challenging the outcome of the elections are Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) and Atiku Abubakar from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The presidential flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, was declared the winner of the election by INEC on March 1, 2023.
Obi and Atiku, who have alleged manipulations of the results, are urging the election tribunal to declare them the winners of the poll.
