The returning officer for the election, Oladiji Adenike, declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the election at a few minutes past 1am on Monday.

Announcing the result at the Lagos headquarters of INEC, Adenike said Sanwo-Olu polled 762,134 votes to win the election.

The Labour Party (LP) came second with 312,329 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) trailed in third place with 62,449 votes.

A total of 1,182,620 voters were accredited, while 1,155,678 votes were valid.

With the INEC declaration, Sanwo-Olu has secured a second term as governor of Lagos.

The declaration marks the end of a bitter campaign process that was often marred by violence and baffling ethnic rhetoric against a group of Nigerians.

Sanwo-Olu intensified his campaign in the three weeks that followed the presidential election of February 25, in which the APC lost Lagos.

The loss, which served as a wakeup call for the ruling party, was overturned in the March 18 governorship election, as the LP, which slightly won the presidential poll, lost the governorship contest by more than 400,000 votes.
