The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has announced that the 2025 budget will include an increased daily feeding allowance for inmates, addressing concerns over nutrition amid economic challenges.

Confirming this adjustment on Tuesday, Nasarawa State NCoS spokesperson Stephen Abene stated that the feeding allowance per inmate will rise from N750 to N1,150, following government approval aimed at improving inmate welfare.

“The government recently approved N1,150 for feeding per inmate from N750, which will be captured in the 2025 budget to reflect the present economic reality,” Abene noted.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that interest in inmate welfare gained traction after a December 2023 statement by NCoS Controller General Haliru Nababa revealed that prisoners’ food allowances were set at N750 per day, while the service allocated N800 per day for each of its 900 dogs.

In August 2024, public outrage followed a viral video from the Afokang Custodial Centre in Calabar, showing poorly prepared meals being served to inmates, which led to an investigation ordered by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

In response, the NCoS noted that the conditions in the video did not represent standards across all facilities but pledged to investigate the incident.

Additionally, a recent report claimed that 12 inmates at the Keffi Medium Security Custodial Centre in Nasarawa died in September 2024 due to an illness reportedly linked to inadequate nutrition.
