The Federal Government has proposed a budget of N38,030,008,805 for feeding inmates in Nigerian custodial centres in 2025, alongside other significant allocations aimed at improving correctional services.
In light of recurring jailbreaks and deteriorating infrastructure, N7.2 billion has been earmarked for the upgrade of correctional facilities to provide a safer and more conducive environment for both inmates and staff.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that further allocations include:
To bolster logistics and security, N2.28 billion has been set aside for the purchase of vehicles, while N563 million is allocated for the construction of a 3,000-capacity maximum security prison in Abuja.
The Federal Government is also focusing on healthcare within the correctional system, with N6.16 million designated for building clinics across the six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory.
These investments reflect a long-term strategy to modernize the prison system and improve living conditions for inmates while ensuring the safety of personnel.
The proposed 2025 budget, which was presented to the National Assembly last week by President Bola Tinubu, is now awaiting vetting and passage.
The measures outlined in the budget aim to address longstanding issues within the Nigerian correctional system, including inadequate infrastructure, poor healthcare, and logistical challenges.
