Inmates Killed In Italian Prison Riot
Six inmates were killed in a prison riot in an Italian prison, while a number of guards were taken hostage in another jail, as unrest spreads across the country over measures approved by the government to contain the spread of the virus — including limiting visits from families and friends.
During a TV interview Francesco Basentini, the head of Italy’s prison administration said that three inmates had died in a jail in the northern Italian town of Modena, three others had died after they were taken away from the structure.
“There have been several riots all over the country” Mr Basentini said.
Riots erupted at at least 27 prisons, where fires have been set. The six deaths occured in a prison in Modena. Two guards were taken hostage in a prison in Pavia. Riots are taking place in several jails.
Pictures of fire trucks and police outside the prison in Modena were seen on national broadcaster Rai, as a plume of smoke filled the sky.
Dozens of police were shown on television deployed outside the San Vittore prison in Milan, where inmates were leaning out of the windows and chanting and, some climbed onto on the roof.
Donato Capece, head of prison guards union Sappe, said the two guards taken hostage in Pavia were released after the intervention of the police.
As part of the decree signed by Giuseppe Conte, Italy’s prime minister, to contain the spread of coronavirus, inmates and their families should avoid physical contact. Prisoners are only allowed to contact families and friends by phone.
The measures will be in place until March 22.
