Insecurity: NGO’s Sensitize Security Agencies Community Leaders On Community Policing

A non Governmental organization, NGO’S, Equal Access International (EAl) and Centre for Law enforcement Nigeria, (CLEEN) Foundation, has begun a four-day capacity building workshop on community policing for security agencies, community leaders, youth and women groups in Kaduna with the aim of finding lasting solutions to the current insecurity bedbelling the country.

The training titled “Securing Nigeria communities” was organized in collaboration with CLEEN Foundation.

Speaking during the opening session, Mr. Gad Peter-Shamaki, the deputy county director, EAI said that the training was aimed at building synergy and cooperation between security agencies and their host communities in order to achieve peace.

“We are working currently in four states Benue, Plateau, Kaduna and Kano.
We intend to increase the participation of women and youth in peace and security.

“Also, to increase coordination, collaboration among security agencies especially on right based approach on community policing because security is a collective responsibility which requires services of all stakeholders.

“Our security agencies do not have all the time and resources to solve insecurity issues, therefore every Nigeria must work with them to support the security process”, he said.

He explained that participants would be trained on early response, strategic community, conflict analysis and planning with the community in order to achieve peace and reduce pressure on security operatives.

Peter-Shamaki added that a community accountability forum would be formed at the end of the training where traditional leaders, youth leaders discuss issues related to security and how to address it.

Also Speaking Mr Ebere Mbaegbu, Program officer, CLEEN foundation said ” the programme would sensitize security operatives and community members on how to work together to prevent and manage conflict in their various communities.

He added that the training would also address the issue of mistrust between the community members and the police especially on the wrong perception that the police lacked the capacity to address some emergencies.

“They will create an opportunity for police and other security agencies to know and understand their host Communities and how to help them better for effective security in our communities been security is a collective responsibility “, he said.

Some participants at the workshop expressed their hope by saying that “this kind of workshop will really help us in terms of collaboration with relevant stakeholders, as well as having a cordial relationship with relevant stakeholders.
