Insecurity: My Meetings With Bandits Yielding Positive Results – Gumi
Renowned Kaduna based Islamic cleric, Ahmad Gumi, says his intervention in the security challenges ravaging the northern part of the country has proved effective in addressing the the situation.
Gumi has been playing the role of mediator between the monstrous bandits and the government following fresh waves of attacks and abductions in north west.
In the last five months, bandits have attacked schools and abducted nearly 500 students in schools in Niger, Zamfara and Kastina, releasing them after ransom was paid.
Gumi has since weighed in on the troubling situation, meeting with the bandits to see how he could get them to desist from their diabolical deeds and recommending to the government what could be done to stem the unsettling tide of banditry.
But in an interview with Daily Post on Thursday, Gumi said his tactics and approach has significantly brought the situation under control, noting that the use of force with someone who’s enmeshed in crime will be counter productive.
He noted that approaching them as a cleric and from spiritual perspective makes them feel comfortable and fill you in on their Plight and demands.
“My interaction with bandits has yielded instant results. When you are dealing with somebody engrossed in criminality, if you approach him as a policeman, you will have a problem but if you come to him as a pastor, he will confess all his sins to you.
“So we approach them as clergy, and they feel comfortable to vomit all their problems. Hence, we see how we can appease and help them.
“We are not approaching them as an authority but from the spiritual angle. You know every human being has that spiritual influence, and that is why we are adopting that,” he added.
