Insecurity: Reps Apologise For Inviting Buhari, Shelve Summon Motion
The house of representatives has squashed a motion pushing for appearance of President Muhammadu Buhari before it over the state of the nation, especially as it concerns insecurity.
Ekohotblog recalls that the house of representatives, on December 2, passed a resolution summoning the president, following the killing of more than 40 farmers in Zabarmari area of Borno state.
Satomi Ahmad, lawmaker representing Jere federal constituency, and nine others from Borno, moved the motion. They insisted that Buhari had to appear before the lower legislative chamber of the national assembly and avail them of the government’s efforts in addressing insecurity in the country.
Subsequently, Femi Gbajabiamila, speaker of the house, on December 2, said the presidency had agreed to the lawmakers demands and the president would address them.
But a day prior to Buhari’s appearance before the lower chamber, Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation (AGF), issued a statement saying the president will no longer honour the lawmakers iinvitation because they have no Constitutional powers to summon the president.
The development caused furore among the citizenry with many saying Buhari’s refusal to appear before the lawmakers is further reinforcement of his administration disregard for separation of power and rule of law.
But the Nation newspaper is reporting that the lawmakers in the lower chamber have now shelve the “immediate and future” plans of inviting the president.
The invitation plan was abandoned because it is mired in ethnic and political colouration, the newspaper quoted a source at have said.
The source reportedly said some lawmakers from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) wanted to use the opportunity to malign and castigate Buhari’s government.
The source also said it was discovered that some of the lawmakers who sponsored the motion went behind to clandestinely apologise to the presidency over their action.
“The house of representatives has foreclosed or dropped any immediate or future plans to invite President Muhammadu Buhari over insecurity in the country because a harmless motion has become political,” the source was quoted to have said.
The source disclosed that the house would no longer bring up the invitation, noting that it would now engage service chiefs and other ministers in charge of the nation’s security to know the true state of things

“Some governors and strategists in government insinuated that the house leadership was working for a different political interest. That was why they pulled the strings from the senate.
“At a point, the row over the invitation was turned into a north-south divide, if not for the political dexterity of the house leadership” the source said.
