Insecurity: SSS Arrests Ganduje’s Aide Who Called For Buhari’s Resignation
Hours after demanding for resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari over the worrisome and parlous state of security in the country, an aide to Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, Salihu Tanko-Yakasai, has been arrested by the State Security Service.
Following the abduction of over 300 girls from a school in Zamfara on Friday, Yakasai had taken to his Twitter page to excoriate the Buhari led administration over its glaring Ineptitude to address the perennial insecurity that ravages the country.
He also lampooned the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the party at all levels have failed Nigerians.
Rattled by the criticism of yakasai, which further serves to undermine the legitimacy of the present administration and underscore how unpopular it has become even among its party members, the secret police, expectedly, apprehended Yakasai.
His arrest was not immediately announced, spurring unsettled friends to take to social media to raise concerns about his whereabouts on Saturday morning.
An SSS official in Kano told later disclosed Tanko-Yakasai was in the custody of the SSS, adding that he arrested while returning from the mosque on Friday afternoon.
The official also added that the governor was yet to be informed about the development.
“Alhamdulillah we just confirmed @dawisu is at DSS office,” a Kano government spokesman also said on Twitter Saturday morning, injecting immediate calm into initial apprehension palpable across the microblogging platform.
“@dawisu was arrested and taken to Abuja from kano. #FreeDawisu now!,” another friend said.
Despite being a top official in a major APC controlled state, Yakasai has been critical of the Buhari-led federal government and also very vocal at expressing his displeasure over the dispiriting state of the nation.
Tanko-Yakasai, who has worked as Mr. Ganduje’s media handler since 2015, was suspended from office for several weeks last year after criticising Mr. Buhari over insecurity. Both Messrs. Ganduje and Buhari are political allies of APC
The SSS, a domestic intelligence outfit, has been notorious for cracking down on critics of Nigerian brutal regimes for decades. The outfit was infamous as a prime suspect in the arrest, disappearance and murder of critics under dictator Sani Abacha.
After staying mildly away from controversies following Nigeria’s return to civil rule in 1999, the SSS returned to its brutal ways under Mr. Buhari, conducting regular crackdowns on critics, including Yele Sowore, Obadiah Mailafia and several journalists and activists.
