Ekohotblog reports that residents of Iraye in Epe, Lagos State, are growing increasingly frustrated with the ongoing power outage that has lasted for several months.
Many have expressed that the power cables in the area are now “useless,” as they no longer provide any electricity, comparing it to rope for drying clothes.
The blackout has caused serious problems for the community, especially for small businesses that depend on power for refrigeration, welding, and other tasks.
People are now have no choice than to rely on expensive generators, adding more financial pressure to an already difficult situation.
“We’ve been in darkness for months,” said Mr. Adekunle, a local shop owner.
“The cables hanging in our streets are useless, like lines for drying clothes. We feel neglected, and we are tired of the promises that have not been kept. This is affecting everyone.”
Residents also mentioned that although the electricity they used to get was very low, but it was still better than having no power at all.
Before the blackout, the supply was often weak, but at least it helped them with daily tasks.
“We used to get some electricity, even though it was very low,” said Mrs. Adebimpe , a local resident.
“At least we could manage with small generators for things like lighting and fans. Now, there’s nothing at all. It’s worse than before, and it’s becoming unbearable.”
Mr. Adebowale, another resident, added, “It is so frustrating when you hear promises, but nothing changes.
Businesses are suffering, and people are struggling to survive without power.
We are just asking for something better than this constant darkness.”
Despite several attempts to contact the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) and local officials for help, the residents say their complaints have not been addressed.
The community is also worried about security, as the lack of street lighting makes the area unsafe at night.
“It’s dangerous for us, especially at night,” said Mrs. Okikiolu. “Without light, it’s hard to feel safe, and criminals take advantage of this. We need the authorities to do something quickly.”
Hon. Abiodun Tobun, Chairman of the Lagos State House Committee on Commerce, Cooperative, and Industry, had earlier promised that power would be restored soon, but Iraye residents are still waiting for relief.
“The community has been patient, but we can’t wait forever,” said Mr. Adebowale. “We need action now.”
