Is It Ideal For A Wife To Buy A Property In Her Name?

By virtue of marriage, husband and wife are one but when it comes to buying of property, is it ideal for the wife to purchase one in her name if she has the money for it?

Ekohotblog attempts to know what Nigerians think.

Read Below:

Husband And Wife Are One Flesh -Olisemake Andrew

Before she buys a property she should answer these questions.

Are they legally married? Do they have kids? Was there an agreement?  Did she seek for her husband’s consent? I am not a lawyer but if these questions aren’t answered sincerely, then it would be wrong for her to buy a property in her name.

Biblically, it is wrong. Wives are advised to cling to our husband and become one flesh not two, two fleshes obviously  means there is an acrimony in the marriage, division in agreement. A wife is a meant to be a  partner, soul lifter and a help mate to her husband.

Traditionally it is not even ideal. You know the implications of going contrary to the law of your husband being the head of a home.

Nna anyi  as the Easterners  call their husbands translated in English means our Lord which means he isthe owner or leader of the house hold.

Therefore the property should be gotten in the family’s name instead of her name“.

My Father’s Name Is Still Relevant –Blessing (Baby Lawyer)

“Inshort, it is more than ideal.

Why shouldn’t I buy a property in my own name?

The fact that we are married ,i bear his surname doesn’t mean my own surname has gone into extinction.

I will be submissive, respectful and  be a loving wife to him but I will buy any property in my name so that my own family can be able to claim the property if I die, God forbids it.

This is my money we are talking about. I worked so hard for it, now I want to get a property and you say I should buy it in whose name? Anyways it all boils down to choices. And that’s what I have chosen“.

If Your Husband Is A Polygamist, Do Not Buy In His Name  -Benjamin

In some cases, it is ideal.

For instance, if the husband is a polygamist, in order  to avoid future disputes and conflicts of interest, it is  advisable to acquire the property in her name.

If he is a monogamist, then consent has to be sought to clarify some extended family norms and agree on the best method to avert future family property disputes or better still acquire the property in her child’s name.

But in a perfect setting where insecurity isn’t detected or perceived, love between husband and wife states that no one’s property belongs to the person but the family, hence, the wife’s or husband’s, it is for  the family!

When Trust And Understanding Exists,  A Wife Will Not Even Think Of That  -Joyce

There are two sides to this.

Firstly, it is very bad for a woman to do such. He is your husband,  you should submit to him in everyway. If you won’t buy a property in his name, don’t even think of it.

This has caused havoc for so many families.

Another thing is that, when there is maturity, trust and agreement it can work out fine without any conflict.

It’s just like asking if I can keep a joint account with my husband, which demands understanding and determination.

So there is actually no big deal in buying a property with my husband’s name“.
