Israel Confirms Assassination Of Hamas Leader, Ismail Haniyeh

Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, has publicly confirmed for the first time that Hamas’s political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in Tehran in July.

Katz made the revelation during a speech in which he vowed to target the leadership of the Iran-backed Houthi movement in Yemen, responsible for launching missiles and drones at Israel.

Haniyeh was killed in an attack on a building where he was staying in the Iranian capital, an operation widely attributed to Israel.

Katz linked Haniyeh’s assassination to broader strikes on key figures in Iran-backed groups, stating, “Just as we did with Haniyeh, [Yahya] Sinwar, and [Hassan] Nasrallah in Tehran, Gaza, and Lebanon, we will do so in Hodeida and Sanaa.”

This announcement comes as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed progress in ceasefire talks with Hamas, though he could not provide a timeline.

Meanwhile, Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who succeeded Haniyeh, was killed by the Israeli military in Gaza during operations in October. The group is currently selecting a new leader.

The escalation reflects a broader regional conflict. Israel has been countering attacks from Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen, alongside its extended military campaign in Gaza.

The Houthis have launched missile strikes, including one that struck Tel Aviv over the weekend, while Israel, supported by the U.S. and U.K., has retaliated against Houthi targets in Yemen.

Since the onset of the conflict last year, triggered by Hamas’s deadly attacks on Israel, the war has claimed over 45,000 lives in Gaza according to local health officials.

In the latest incidents, at least 11 civilians were reported killed in strikes on a designated “safe zone,” while three Israeli soldiers lost their lives in northern Gaza.
