The Israeli military has reported targeting Hezbollah positions in Lebanon after detecting preparations to launch missiles and rockets into Israel.
“In a self-defence act to remove these threats, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) is striking terror targets,” stated IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari.
Israel has alerted Lebanese civilians to evacuate areas where Hezbollah, an Iran-backed Shia Muslim group, is active.
Following this, Hezbollah announced a major drone assault on Israel, which it claimed was retaliation for the killing of its senior military commander last month.
EDITORS PICK:
On Sunday morning, sirens warning of incoming rockets were heard in northern Israel, though there were no immediate reports of injuries.
The IDF reported that Hezbollah “has just launched over 150 projectiles from Lebanon toward Israeli territory,” and Hagari added that “dozens of IAF (Israel’s Air Force) jets are currently striking targets in various locations in southern Lebanon.”
Hezbollah claimed to have fired over 320 Katyusha rockets, targeting 11 Israeli military bases and barracks. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called an emergency security cabinet meeting, with his office stating that he and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant are “managing the situation” from the IDF’s base in Tel Aviv.
Hezbollah’s statement justified the attack as a response to “the brutal Zionist aggression, which led to the martyrdom of… Fuad Shukr,” the group’s senior military commander killed in a July Israeli airstrike in Beirut.
This exchange of fire between Israel and Hezbollah follows ongoing conflict since last October’s war with Hamas in Gaza, another Iran-backed group.
