Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has appointed Yechiel Leiter, a U.S.-born former chief of staff in the Finance Ministry, as the next Israeli ambassador to the United States.
“Yechiel Leiter is an exceptional diplomat with strong oratory skills and a deep knowledge of American culture and politics,” Netanyahu announced in a statement on Friday.

The appointment comes just three days after Donald Trump’s re-election to a second term, widely celebrated in Israel due to his strong pro-Israel stance.
Leiter, who has also served as deputy director general in the Education Ministry and acting chairman of the Israel Ports Company, brings extensive government experience to the role. His son was tragically killed last year while serving in the Israeli military during the Gaza conflict with Hamas.
Yisrael Ganz, head of the Yesha Council representing Jewish settlements in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, also praised the appointment. Leiter, a resident of the Gush Etzion settlement area, has been a prominent advocate in international outreach efforts supporting Israeli settlements in the West Bank, often referred to as Judea and Samaria by Israelis.
