Israeli Strike Kills 73 In Northern Gaza – Medics Confirm

An Israeli airstrike on several houses and a multi-storey residential building in Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza, on Saturday resulted in dozens of casualties, according to local doctors and officials, with rescue efforts still ongoing.

The Hamas media office reported that at least 73 people were killed in the strike. While no official casualty count had yet been provided by Gaza’s health ministry, Medway Abbas, a senior health ministry official, confirmed the figure.

The Israeli military stated that it was investigating the incident but claimed that the numbers reported by the Hamas media office were exaggerated.

It argued that the figures did not match its own data, the type of munitions used, or the precision of the strike, which it said targeted a Hamas location.

Rescue efforts, according to Palestinian health officials, have been severely hindered due to a blackout of telecommunication and internet services, now in its second day.

Earlier, Gaza’s health ministry reported that Israeli strikes had killed 35 Palestinians across the region.

“This is a war of genocide and ethnic cleansing. The occupation has conducted a horrifying massacre in Beit Lahiya,” the Hamas media office said.

Residents and medical personnel reported that Israeli forces intensified their siege on Jabalia, Gaza’s largest refugee camp, by surrounding it with tanks deployed to nearby towns like Beit Hanoun and Beit Lahiya.

Evacuation orders were issued to civilians in the area. Israeli officials stated that these orders were intended to separate Hamas fighters from civilians, denying any systematic plan to clear out residents from Jabalia or other northern regions.

In Jabalia, witnesses described how Israeli forces targeted several shelters holding displaced families, storming the facilities and detaining numerous men.

Unverified footage circulated on social media showed groups of Palestinian men sitting near a tank, while others were led away by soldiers.

Medical personnel and residents accused Israeli forces of bombing homes and blockading hospitals, cutting off access to medical supplies and food in a bid to force people to leave the camp.

Hospital officials, facing an Israeli evacuation order, refused to abandon their critically ill patients, choosing to remain despite the dire conditions.

“Hospitals in northern Gaza suffer from stark shortages of medical supplies and manpower and are overwhelmed by the number of casualties,” said Hussam Abu Safiya.

“We are now trying to decide who among the wounded we needed to attend to first, and several wounded died because we could not deal with them,” he said.
