The evacuation order, delivered through various means including text messages and flyers, has left many Palestinian families scrambling to relocate to what Israel terms an “expanded humanitarian zone” around 20 kilometers away.
The situation escalated further as explosions rocked east Rafah shortly after midday, reportedly due to an Israeli airstrike targeting certain houses.
Hamas swiftly denounced the evacuation as a “dangerous escalation,” with senior official Sami Abu Zuhri blaming both Isreal and its ally, the United States, for the perceived aggression.
Israel’s military, however, described the operation as a “limited scope” effort aimed at encouraging residents to evacuate, without specifying further details or confirming any forthcoming offensive actions.
The evacuation has thrown many families into uncertainty, with some resorting to loading their belongings onto donkey carts while navigating through rain-soaked streets.
Witnesses on the ground noted the overcrowded conditions in the areas designated by Israel for relocation, raising concerns about the lack of adequate space for additional tents.
Amidst fears of a potential humanitarian crisis, displaced Palestinians like Aminah Adwan have called for urgent intervention from the Arab world to prevent what they term as “genocide” and “catastrophe” in Rafah.
The move comes as Israel, in its ongoing conflict with Hamas, asserts the need to root out militants and hostages allegedly sheltering in Rafah.
This prospect of a high-casualty operation has sparked concerns among Western powers and neighboring Egypt, which is actively seeking to mediate a new round of truce talks between Israel and Hamas.
