EKO HOT BLOG reports that the United States has made preparations to evacuate American citizens from Israel to Cyprus, and this evacuation is scheduled to take place on Monday. The U.S. embassy announced this evacuation plan in a security alert issued on Sunday.
According to Punch, the embassy stated that as Israel appears to be moving closer to a potential invasion of the Gaza Strip, a ship will depart from the Israeli port of Haifa and head to Limassol, Cyprus. This evacuation will accommodate “U.S. nationals and their immediate family members with a valid travel document.”
Many thousands of U.S. passport holders currently reside in Israel, and sadly, 29 of them have been confirmed as casualties in the attacks by Hamas on October 7. Another 15 are unaccounted for and are believed to be held as hostages by Hamas since those attacks occurred.
US Passenger Ship
The U.S. embassy did not specify the exact number of individuals who will be evacuated on the ship but mentioned that “boarding will proceed in order of arrival and is on a space-limited basis.” Boarding is scheduled to commence at 8:00 am (0500 GMT).
Each passenger will be required to sign a document promising to reimburse the cost of the trip, and they will only be allowed to carry one suitcase. The embassy also noted that some chartered flights will be arranged from Cyprus for onward travel once the ship reaches Limassol.
