‘It Is Preposterous, Unconscionable’ – Presidency Slams European Union Over Verdict On 2023 Elections

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Nigerian government has rejected the European Union’s conclusions on the 2023 general elections, calling them “preposterous and unconscionable.”

The EU EOM had criticized the handling of the elections, saying that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) failed to deliver on its promise of a transparent and inclusive democratic process.

The government, however, said that the EU EOM’s report was based on a “limited coverage” of the elections and that it relied heavily on “rumours, hearsay, and cocktails of prejudiced and uninformed social media commentaries.”

The government also pointed to the fact that the NBA, which sent out over 1,000 observers to the elections, found that 91.8% of Nigerians rated the conduct of the elections as credible and satisfactory.

The government concluded by saying that it had “put the elections behind us” and that it was urging the EU and other foreign interests to be “objective in all their assessments of the internal affairs of our country and allow Nigeria to breathe.”

In addition to the NBA, the African Union, ECOWAS, and the Commonwealth Observer Mission have all praised the conduct of the 2023 elections.

The EU EOM’s report has been met with mixed reactions in Nigeria. Some have welcomed the report, saying that it is a necessary step in improving the country’s electoral process.

Others have criticized the report, saying that it is biased and that it does not reflect the views of the majority of Nigerians.

The Nigerian government’s rejection of the EU EOM’s report is likely to further fuel the debate about the conduct of the 2023 elections.
