In a candid interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, Odegbami emphasized the importance of local expertise, stating, “Unless we want to be enslaved forever, in our colonial mentality where we think that only the white can coach us to success.” He underscored the abundance of qualified Nigerians capable of leading the national team to greater heights.
Reflecting on the departure of Portuguese manager Jose Peseiro, who recently concluded his tenure with the Super Eagles, Odegbami expressed a desire for a shift away from foreign coaching appointments. He urged Peseiro to gracefully exit his coaching role and make way for a new era of Nigerian leadership within the team.
Critiquing Peseiro’s performance, Odegbami suggested that the former coach had delivered only average results during his tenure. He emphasized the need for a coach who can lead the team to victory, expressing frustration with past coaches who failed to secure significant wins for Nigeria.
