EKO HOT BLOG reports that the oil production site, previously operated by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and now managed by Renaissance Africa Energy Holdings, has been shut down as a result of the demonstration.
Naija News reports that the protest was triggered by dissatisfaction with the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) recent recommendations on the delineation of wards and polling units within the Warri Federal Constituency. The commission’s move followed a recent Supreme Court ruling.
The protesters, who gathered in large numbers, vowed to extend their actions to other major national assets and facilities within Itsekiri territory if urgent steps are not taken to address their grievances.
This incident comes barely a week after INEC proposed the contentious ward delineations, raising concerns among the Itsekiri people about political representation and territorial boundaries.
