Eko Hot Blog reports that Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reassured women residents of his administration’s support in creating a more equitable, inclusive and just society, where everyone has the opportunities to fulfill their potentials and lead fulfilling lives.
He spoke on Friday during the 2024 International Women’s Day (IWD) Celebration held at the Mobalaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos.
Sanwo-Olu, who attended the event alongside Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, charged women to embrace up-building values in maximizing their potentials for qualitative lifestyles.
In her address, the Commissioner for Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (MWAPA), Cecilia Bolaji Dada, implored women not just to consider investment as a moral imperative, but one directed at collective future in unlocking their full potentials, drive economic growth, social development and enhancing sustainable progress for all.
On her part, First Lady Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu extolled the virtues of women as nurturers and nation builders.
The Lagos government celebration of the IWD 2024 witnessed hundreds of women from across various parts of the state celebrating.
The event featured a parade of women from all local government areas of the state.
The International Women’s Day is celebrated worldwide on March 8 of every year.
IWD 2024 was tagged “Invest in women: Accelerate progress”.
According to the United Nations (UN), here are five key areas needing joint action:
1. Investing in women, a human rights issue: Time is running out. Gender equality is the greatest human rights challenge, benefiting everyone.
2. Ending poverty: Due to the COVID pandemic and conflicts, 75 million more people have fallen into severe poverty since 2020. Immediate action is crucial to prevent over 342 million women and girls living in poverty by 2030.
3. Implementing gender-responsive financing: Conflicts and rising prices may lead 75% of countries to cut public spending by 2025, negatively impacting women and their essential services.
4. Shifting to a green economy and care society: The current economic system disproportionately affects women. Advocates propose a shift to a green economy and care society to amplify women’s voices.
5. Supporting feminist change-makers: Despite leading efforts, feminist organizations receive only 0.13% of official development assistance.
