Eko Hot Blog reports that Nigerian midfielder Alex Iwobi etched his name into the Premier League record books on Saturday after scoring a late consolation goal for Fulham in their 2-1 loss away at the Molineux Stadium against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Iwobi’s strike in the dying moments of the match was recorded as the latest goal scored in the Premier League this season, according to Opta, the renowned sports data and analytics company.
Although the goal proved to be a mere consolation, as Wolves held on for the victory after Rayan Ait-Nouri and Nelson Semedo had given them a 2-0 lead, it marked a significant milestone for the Nigerian international.
The goal took Iwobi’s tally for the season to five, setting a new personal record for the highest number of goals he has scored in a single Premier League campaign. His previous best was three goals, achieved during the 2018/19 season when he made 35 league appearances for Everton.
Remarkably, the current season has been Iwobi’s most prolific to date, as he has already equaled his overall goal-scoring record of six goals across all competitions, a feat he achieved in the 2018/19 season over the course of 51 appearances.
Following his return from the Africa Cup of Nations in February, the 26-year-old has been in fine form, finding the back of the net twice in his last four games, including a crucial winner against Manchester United in late February.
Iwobi’s impressive goal-scoring exploits this season highlight his continued growth and development as a player, and his ability to contribute goals from midfield has undoubtedly been a valuable asset for Fulham in their pursuit of Premier League survival.
