Iyanya Plus Nicki Minaj: How Millions Fled In Quest For A Hit
  • Nigerian musician, Iyanya might have quite the cautionary tale for aspiring music artistes in search of a hit son; ‘Never Look Beyond Thy Means’.

  • The musician revealed that he went on a bid to feature Nicki Minaj following his hit song, Kukere.

  • This according to Iyanya lost his team millions of naira in botched bid for the American rapper.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Nigerian singer, Onoyom Mbuk, popularly known as Iyanya, has revealed that he and his team lost millions of naira in a failed attempt to feature the famous American-Trinidadian rapper, Nicki Minaj, on one of his songs.

According to Iyanya, after the success of his breakthrough song, ‘Kukere’, he and his team were under immense pressure to produce another hit single. They eventually recorded a song titled ‘Flavour’, but they felt it wasn’t the next big single after ‘Kukere’.

EDITOR’S PICKS:

Iyanya’s producer, D’Tunez, then altered the beat for ‘Kukere’ and used it to make ‘Your Waist’, which became a hit and received a lot of airplay. Despite this success, Iyanya and his team were not entirely satisfied with the traction the song was receiving.

As a result, Ubi Franklin, Iyanya’s record label boss, suggested a remix with Nicki Minaj to help boost the song’s success internationally. Iyanya and his team flew to Atlanta, United States, to meet with Nicki Minaj to discuss the collaboration. However, they were told that it would cost a whopping $200,000 to sign her to the song, which they couldn’t afford at that time.

In a social media post, Iyanya said, “Your Waist was so massive we decided it should go international and we needed the right artiste to help with that journey. Ubi Franklin suggested Nicki Minaj, and I asked how we were going to pay for that. He laughed and said ‘if your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough’.”

The failed collaboration with Nicki Minaj resulted in a significant financial loss for Iyanya and his team, who had invested a considerable amount of money in promoting the song. Iyanya stated that it was a hard lesson learned, and he had to learn to focus on producing quality music rather than chasing after big collaborations.
