The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) announced on Thursday its decision to relax the minimum admission age requirement of 18 years for the 2024/2025 academic session.
The examination body stated that institutions are now permitted to admit candidates who meet their standards and will turn 16 by August 31, 2025.
JAMB’s spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this in a statement released in Abuja, titled “Admission of candidates with minimum admissible age of 16 years.”

Benjamin emphasized, “Without compromising standards or infringing on any institution’s admission policy, the Board has decided to allow willing institutions to admit candidates who will be 16 years old by August 31, 2025, as long as they meet the institution’s requirements but were previously ineligible due to age restrictions.”
He clarified that this adjustment does not affect institutions that maintain their own minimum age of 16 years, which remains a firm requirement.

As part of the new development, institutions are requested to identify candidates who will be 16 years old between January 1 and August 31, 2025, and submit the list within a week to enable a final decision.
Benjamin further explained that the move aims to provide equal opportunities and prevent any undue advantage for candidates admitted at the end of the 2024/2025 admission period.
