Novak Djokovic missed out on his 100th career title as Jannik Sinner triumphed in a thrilling Shanghai Masters final.

The world number one, 23-year-old Sinner, secured a 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 victory over the 37-year-old Djokovic, continuing his remarkable form this season.

Djokovic had been aiming to join the exclusive club of players with 100 or more titles, a feat only achieved by Jimmy Connors (109) and the present Roger Federer (103).

“I have got to keep striving to make it happen somewhere in the near future,” said 24-time major champion Djokovic, whose only title this year has been the Olympic gold which had been eluding him.

“It’s not a live-or-die type of goal for me, I think I’ve achieved all of my biggest goals in career.

“Right now it’s really about Slams and about seeing how far I can kind of push the bar for myself.”

Sinner, despite an unresolved doping case looming over him — despite being initially cleared of any wrongdoing — delivered a flawless performance to claim his seventh title of a remarkable season.

The Italian, who has already triumphed at the Australian Open and US Open, has won an impressive 65 out of 71 matches in 2024.
