Jigawa State Records 178 Cases Of Rape

  • The state records 178 cases of rape according to the Deputy Governor of the state.

A report from the state Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) has revealed that 178 rape cases were recorded from January to August, 2021 in Jigawa State, EkohotBlog reports.

It mentioned that from January 2021 to August, the state recorded 178 rape cases which outscored the 137 cases recorded in the previous year in the state.

Due to this, the Jigawa State Government says it is making efforts to ensure that all the rapists are prosecuted in order to reduce the increasing rate of rape activities.

State Deputy Governor, Malam Umar Namadi made this known at a one-day public policy dialogue to improve basic health services in Jigawa organized by partnership to engage, reform and learn PERL, held at Manpower development institute, Dutse.

He said the government of the state is disturbed over the increasing rape cases recorded on a daily basis across the state.

Namadi explained further that in order to address the issues, the state government had recently signed the person prohibition act prescribing the life imprisonment or death sentence to whoever was convicted.

Namadi said the main challenge the state is facing is to proving the cases of rape before the court of law; because of the parents’ attitude in tampering with evidences before reporting the case to police.

He said the state government will increase its funding in order to address the challenges and reduce the hardship of the affected victims, their mental health and wellbeing.

He said the state government will create additional SARC in each of the three senatorial districts of the state.

He therefore urged parents and caregivers to always report the case to the nearest security agencies before tampering with evidence for discrete action.
