Jill Ellis has resigned as coach of the United States women’s national team after leading the team to its second consecutive Women’s World Cup title.

The American citizen, who was born in England, will, however, stay on until October for an upcoming five-game victory tour of friendly games around America before taking leave of the role she has held for five years.

“The opportunity to coach this team and work with these amazing women has been the honor of a lifetime,” Ellis said in a statement while thanking the players for their commitment and passion.

The 52-year-old became the first coach to win back-to-back World Cups in 81 years, leading the USWNT to World Cup titles in 2015 and 2019. She has a record of 102 wins, 18 draws and just seven losses during her five-year stellar reign as USWNT coach and never lost a World Cup game.

In reaction, US Soccer president, Carlos Cordeiro, said: “The US Soccer Federation and the sport in general owes Jill a debt of gratitude,” adding: “Jill was always extremely passionate about this team, analytical, tremendously focused and not afraid to make tough decisions while giving her players the freedom to play to their strengths.”
