His confirmation, alongside Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, would also mark the first time in history that African Americans simultaneously hold both of the military’s top positions.
During the nomination ceremony in the White House Rose Garden, President Biden described General Brown as a warrior from a proud lineage of warriors, acknowledging his military family.
With over 3,000 flight hours, including 130 in combat, Brown has firsthand experience of being in the heat of battle while maintaining composure, Biden remarked with a touch of humor. The president shared an anecdote about Brown’s F-16 catching fire once, leading to his ejection into a Florida swamp.
Biden commended General Brown for his extensive knowledge of US military operations worldwide, earned through a distinguished career. He emphasized Brown’s standing as a respected figure among allies and partners, adding that his mindset is focused on winning.
The president viewed Brown’s appointment as an asset to his administration and the United States as they navigate future challenges.
Brown’s responsibilities as the Pentagon’s top military officer would involve maintaining a combat-ready force capable of deterring and defeating potential threats, as well as managing competition with China and addressing renewed Russian aggression in Europe.
Furthermore, Brown would oversee the military during a time when emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and 3D printing, could potentially reshape the nature of conflicts, according to President Biden.
By nominating Brown and actively promoting diverse representation in top government positions, Biden reiterated his commitment to inclusivity and equal opportunities.
He applauded Brown’s courage in speaking out about his experiences with racism and his deep love for the country, acknowledging the strength and determination it required.
