US President Joe Biden has dropped out of his re-election race.

Eko Hot Blog reports that United States President Joe Biden says he is dropping out of the race for a second term in office.

Biden disclosed his decision in a statement posted on social media on Sunday.

He said, even though his desire was to spend another four years in office, his took the decision to drop out in the best interest of the Democratic Party and the country.

The US president said he will speak directly to Americans soon.

Notably, Biden did not immediately endorse his Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor for the presidential ticket, but he thanked her for her support throughout his presidency.

“It has been the greatest honour of my life to serve as your President,” the statement read in part.

“And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.

“I will speak to the Nation later this week in more detail about my decision.

“For now, let me express my deepest gratitude to all those who have worked so hard to see me reelected.

“I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris for being an extraordinary partner in all this work. And let me express my heartfelt appreciation to the American people for the faith and trust you have placed in me.”

This development comes after weeks of an intense pressure campaign trying to push Biden out as his party’s nominee.

Following his disastrous performance in the June 27 presidential debate, he had said he was in the race to win, rejecting calls to drop out.

However, the calls intensified in recent days after Biden contracted COVID as at least 35 lawmakers called on his to drop out, ultimately helping to push him out.

His decision to leave the race means Democrats are now seeking a new presidential nominee in the next weeks to face Republican nominee, former President Donald Trump.
