Joe Biden Makes Historic Pick, Nominates Kamala Harris, An African-American Woman As Running Mate

As the race to the White house garners momemtum, the Democrats’ Presidential candidate, Joe Biden who is obligated to nominate a running mate for the combined ticket that will challenge President Trump and the Republicans in the scheduled November Presidential election as the dominant opposition party has eventually made a historic pick.

Among the top Democrats that vied to be nominated as Vice Presidential candidate, Joe Biden has opted for the California’s third US female Senator, Kamala Harris.

Born in Oakland, California, Harris is a graduate of Howard University and University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Harris began her career in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office before being recruited to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office and later the City Attorney of San Francisco’s office. In 2003, she was elected the 27th District Attorney of San Francisco, serving until 2011.

Harris was narrowly elected Attorney General of California in 2010, and was re-elected in 2014. Harris faced criticism from reformers for tough-on-crime policies she pursued while she was California’s attorney general. In November 2016, she defeated Loretta Sanchez in the 2016 Senate election to succeed outgoing Senator Barbara Boxer, becoming California’s third female U.S. Senator. As a senator, she has supported healthcare reform, federal descheduling of cannabis, a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, the DREAM Act, a ban on assault weapons, and progressive tax reform. She gained a national profile after her pointed questioning of Trump administration officials during Senate hearings, including U.S. Attorneys General Jeff Sessions and William Barr, and Associate Justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

Harris ran for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in the 2020 election, briefly becoming one of the highest-profile candidates before ending her campaign on December 3, 2019, citing lack of funds to continue.[6] She is on the shortlist to become presumptive presidential nominee Joe Biden’s vice-presidential running mate in 2020.

The California Senator is indeed the most suitable to deputize Joe Biden because of her charismatic qualities and debating spirit who has been vetted on the national stage and is quite a historic pick as the first African American and Indian American candidate on a national ticket which is believed would facilitate their chances of occupying the White House come November, 2020.

Her nomination has finally put to rest the over a year race that placed political analysts and keen political observers on who becomes the Democrat’s and Presidential and Vice Presidential Candidates for the forthcoming US Presidential Election.

The two are set to deliver remarks in Biden’s hometown of Wilmington, Del., on Wednesday, and together hold a virtual fundraiser. The coronavirus pandemic prevents Biden and Harris from rolling out their new ticket in the usual format: a boisterous introductory rally in a key swing state.

If the duo eventually defeats Donald Trump in the November election, Harris would eventually be sworn in as the Vice President thereby making her the first United States Black-American woman to occupy such exalted position.
