Joe Igbokwe, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has raised concerns about the ongoing abuse and mutilation of the naira notes in Nigeria.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that on Sunday, Igbokwe informed the relevant authorities that Nigerians continue to throw naira notes on the ground and walk on them during social events such as parties, burials, and naming ceremonies.

In a post on his Facebook page, Igbokwe questioned whether the ban on naira abuse had been lifted, prompting a response from the authorities.

He wrote, “Let me remind the Authorities concerned that Nigerians are still throwing Naira notes on the ground and walking on them at parties, burials, naming ceremonies, etc. Have we lifted the ban? So that you know.”

This comes after some Nigerian celebrities were previously prosecuted for naira abuse as part of efforts to curb the mutilation of the currency. Popular crossdresser Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, was sentenced to six months in jail for the offense.

Similarly, socialite Pascal Okechukwu, known as Cubana Chief Priest, was arraigned but pleaded not guilty and was granted bail.

Actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin was also sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for spraying and stepping on naira notes.
